The University of Regensburg is an innovative and interdisciplinary campus university with over 20.000 students. The Department of Interdisciplinary and Multiscalar Area Studies (DIMAS) aims to strengthen and expand Area Studies in research and teaching. It consists of six permanent professorships as well as other members of the participating faculties, researchers and supporting staff. The DIMAS Professorship for Transregional Cultures of Knowledge (Transregional Cultures of Knowledge) focuses on the historical study of the transnational and transregional movement of ideas across boundaries, including but not limited to political ideologies, religions, norms, and cultures of expertise. The Professorship focuses on themes like socialist and religious internationalism with a regional focus on the former Soviet Union as well as the Middle East. Ongoing areas of research include the history of global economic governance and the use of digital technologies in communicating history to the wider public.
To strengthen the group, we are seeking to appoint a Research Associate (m/w/d).
At the level of either doctoral student or postdoctoral research fellow. The appointment is available part-time (20,05 hours per week) and is compensated following TV-L E13. Applicants employed at the level of doctoral student are required to pursue a doctorate during this time, while applicants employed at the post-doctoral level are required to pursue a Habilitation, second book, or equivalent project (paragraph 2 Abs. 1 WissZeitVG). The initial contract shall be limited to three years, with the possibility of extension.
Responsibilities
- Development of a doctoral or Habilitation project in the field of transnational, transregional, international or global history
- Publication of academic papers in journals and presentation at conferences and seminars
- Teaching (2.5 SWS per week during the semester, in line with a 0.5 p/t contract)
- Academic support of ongoing and evolving research projects of the Professorship, including but not limited to projects on public communication of history through video and audio channels
- Support of the Professorship’s applications for third-party funding
Requirements
- Completed Master’s Degree in History, Area Studies or a related field (for those applying to complete a doctorate) with at least a note of “good” or equivalent; completed PhD (or proof of having submitted or defended a PhD thesis) in History, Area Studies or a related field (for those applying to the post-doctoral level)
- Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment
- good written and oral communication skills in English
- Proven ability to conduct research on transnational or transregional history
- Ability to work in a team and to carry out independent research
- Desirable: good written and oral communication in German
- Desirable: command of non-European foreign languages and/or experience conducting archival research. The Professorship is particularly interested in candidates working with sources in Russian, Arabic, Persian, or Turkic languages, but is open to all (trans-)regional specializations.
- Desirable: experience or interest in video and audio production (podcast production, video production, management of YouTube channel, post-production skills, etc.)
